When the 50-State Quarter Program began in 1999 the obverse design was altered slightly. The reason for this was to include some of the wording from the reverse. Certain things are required by law and cannot be omitted. Also this allowed more freedom for the state design. Howeve, the obverse is still the recognizable image of Americas first president.
The influx of fifty new and interesting designs on the reverse has brought new interest to coin collecting. This applys not only to quarters, but to all kinds of U. S. coins. A large number of Americans now save at least one example of each new design, and nearly as many try to assemble a full sets. Owing to the success of the program, a secondary program was established to extended coinage through 2009. Its purpose was to recognize The District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.
